Jerome - Muir Woods, CA

jerome was an odd man that I found by the side of the road while traveling on the Panoramic Highway in Central California. He just stood there waiving to the cars as they passed by and on my pass I was intrigued so I turned around, parked it and took some pictures. He was a very nice guy but rambled on about being related to the Governor b/c of his connections with some old movie stars. To him it was only about 4-5 years since the Korean War and he'd gone to speak to the President about improving conditions for the Koreans, only to find that no one was interested and no one was listening to him. They all said he was crazy and, quite obviously, he was since it was 2008 and the Korean war was over 50 years ago. The man carried on for about 15 minutes while I shot pictures of him. It was a mild summer day that day but it was nowhere near cold enough to warrant a sweater, hooded sweatshirt and a parka - which is what he was wearing that day in addition to about 4 different types of hats and the hoodie on his head. Very odd man, but so sweet in his ramblings. I left not really knowing what was going on with him but he obviously had some issues. I did get out of him that he was originally from Brooklyn, which made sense because the accent matched.

this is spook. one of our wonderful two cats who has a personality unmatched to any animal i've ever had the pleasure of hanging with. The thing about cats is, they own you, not the other way around as previously thought. This boy is no exception to the rule.

I took this photo a while back with my iPhone which gives me a modest 2 x 3 print sized image with not so great quality. However, I took this image into the new Adobe LightRoom 2.0 to test out some of the new features that I have been hearing so much about today. The Vignetting effect works better in LR 2.0 than it does in Photoshop. So I prefer it. Otherwise, here is a very modest photograph of a very special feline being as well as my very special lady, sleeping in the back.

well, yes, it has been a long time since i posted. thanks for asking. I've been considering this blog software and decided that at some point I am going to make the switch to wordpress since its an easier layout and a cleaner design. I really do love pixel post, but it doesn't work for me as a blog with text. If I would just post images this would be fine. However, my portfolio website will remain under pixel post. It is very easy to maintain and add new images so for me, it works.

Not so much has happened except that I went to Ohio for a quick visit and considering another one to spend some time with my girlfriends family. I took some photos of some friends and family. One of which I am posting. My cousin's Eve and Isabella who were watching my other cousin Ian play in a band on stage for his graduation party. I felt that this trip yielded a lot of really beautiful photographs of children. To me this photograph is very lifestyle which I think is where my focus with my personal work is going to be. Not so much commercial, although shooting commercially is where the money is, but I want a very natural feel to the photographs I take. Editing is going to be a bitch because the look I am going for is very specific, Suffice to say that photo's like this one are the look. Maintaining that and thinking about it while I shoot is the difficult part. Editing becomes even more difficult because I find it nearly impossible to stay objective about my work OR more so, I have a hard time figuring out what is good or not.

There is another photograph of these two taken right after this one in which they are both looking into the camera smiling. I think it is a beautiful photograph but not the same look as this. This is natural. Eve looking at Isabella the expression on her face. It wasn't thought about. It was just there. A few seconds later was thought about - it was a conscious decision - When a camera is pointed at you, you smile. To me, this picture says more than the other one. However, the other one is probably more marketable.

Back to Ohio in October to shoot a wedding and senior portraits for my cousin. A lot of photographers I work with say that shooting for family and friends is a bitch. But I quite enjoy it. They respect my work and want to see more, they are very easy to work with and trust my judgement. I wish my family were creative directors and art buyers. It would make life easier.
.

Trojan Seahorse - Mermaid Parade 2008 : Coney Island, Brooklyn, NY

Well it's been a long 3 days of fashion - 2 with Kenneth Cole and 1 with Nautica, in addition to the three days last week also with Kenneth Cole. As much as I love the money involved, fashion, especially this type of fashion (look books, really) doesn't interested me. To the client's credit though, these aren't about creativity in the imagery, its about the art of the clothing, so it should be very simple. Anyway, the photographer was a very cool guy - Mike Rosenthal, who's actually a really talented photographer.

Here is another photo from the Mermaid Parade. Hope you enjoy.

Obviously we spent all day yesterday at the Coney Island Mermaid Parade. Most of my photo's are up on my flickr site - www.flickr.com/photos/ritechus. It was actually a really great day. A little sunburn, a little entertainment and a little pizza from Totonno's, not to mention that we met a very nice couple while waiting in line at Totonno's.

More Rust: Buenos Aires

God I hope I am not boring everyone with these photographs of texture which is really just a plethora of rust shots - the city seems to have quite an abundance of this which just shows the age of this very beautiful town. This is what I got though. Not really much time to shoot with anything else. On a more interesting note, all of these shots were taken with a digital camera using film lenses - to be specific the 45mm Pentax 67 Lens, which is a beauty. I was able to get ahold of an adaptor that allows users to shoot digitally with old lenses, which have a much better quality of glass than digital lenses. However the tradeoff is that you cannot use the full optics because digital sensors are much smaller. A Pentax 67 is a medium format lens whereas the Canon is a 35mm camera. Still boring you? Sorry.

yesterday, while making breakfast I sliced my fingernail off of my left index finger. It still stings and I have a bandage wrapped around it to protect it from germs. Emily and I spent the day out in Coney Island walking the length of the beach towards the north end. We reached the end of the beach, or rather the start of a private beach. There are areas though on that beach that look untouched. Coney island is a very trashy beach filled with inconsiderate people who leave their trash behind. There are also women who wear bikini's who shouldn't!

In the evening we tried Totonno's Pizza for the first time. The service was a little slow but the food was actually excellent. We took the B68 home and made brownies in the evening and watched Definitely, Maybe before I passed out on the couch. Twas a good day!

I'd have liked to spend a little more time on this image but I was also supposed to be working while I was walking around shooting images in Buenos Aires - Of course, I was shooting textures again. The focus is a pretty good here, but the texture is a little more subtle. I still have quite a few textures to go and I think I will be doing another series of textures later in the year.
